Almost everyone in countries like the UK, United States, Canada, New Zeeland & Australia etc should have heard of the famous science Fiction television series Dr. Who by the BBC! Now that DW is back on TV since 05 after it’s 15yr pause the serial has gotten considerably well known all over again, so mush so in fact that even the sci-fi channel has taken an interest in the show.
Thanks to the new serial DW is now officially the longest running Science fiction serial ever with the first episode broadcasted by the BBC on November the twenty third 1963, an episode in which the Doctor and his friends journeyed back one hundred thousand years into Earth’s past to help out some somewhat dim cavemen so that they could make the discovery of fire. Star Trek happens to be the second longest running Science fiction series of all time having started in nineteen sixty thee with episodes being produced up in to only a few years ago.
With the huge popularity of Doctor Who, the BBC began creating Doctor Who Audio books back in the mid 70s for cassette and LP. In the beginning the BBC only produced soundtracks from the original serial and then had the Doctors of the time add some linking narration for completion. It wasn’t long before the BBC decided to take the audio releases to the next level by releasing audio book stories exclusively for Audiobook release.
Also the Dr. Who Audiobook family was expanded with the release of Audiobooks from episodes that had solely appeared on the radio. Another good use the BBC have found for audio with Dr. Who is the re-creation of old episodes that had been lost. While I write this the BBC’s Audio Book collection currently stands at over fifty titles. The range spans all the way though the 1st Doctor right up until the present Doctor, David Tennant. Also Torchwood Audio and Sarah Jane Audiobooks have also been added in recent times.
On our planet today audio is even more popular than ever thanks to MP3 players. Audios help us to achieve more out of our increasingly busier days, as it is so easy for as to listen to them while doing other things like working out, house work, driving, and other activities that permit multitasking. Another reason why folks like Doctor Who audio is because in many cases the audio episodes are now read by the actors of the serial. Parents also buy them for kids entertainment in cars etc.
The way things stand right now it looks like Doctor Who and its spin-off show torchwood and the Sarah Jane adventures are doing really well so things look good for us to be able to enjoy them for some years to come.
