Many people would like to know if death in the family is a valid reason for trip cancellation when talking about travel insurance. It could be a sudden death, but even when someone has been ill or a cancer patient, there is really no way to know for sure when someone is going to die.

CSA Travel, states that their policy will cover you if you die, or a family member and even a traveling companion. It may not be true for all companies which means you better ask before purchasing a policy if they would also cover for your traveling companion.
Some other companies only cover for you or your immediate family and some provide you with accidental death policy which would be of use while traveling. This one is another good one to ask about. This is a great policy you could get besides your regular disability policy if you have one. However, this policy probably doesnt give you any coverage while you are traveling.
